Decorating Your Kitchen Table For Christmas
Three ways to decorate your dinner table this Christmas
What's Christmas without friends and family gathered around the dinner table? Delight your guests with one of these three Christmas dinner table decoration ideas.
Choose your favourite combination!
1- A modern and alternative Christmas table
Setting the table for Christmas dinner doesn't have to be a headache. And you don't have to pile it high with Christmas ornaments or other Christmas decorations. In this first design, we opted for a modern and alternative Christmas table but with a few folk-inspired touches. So, with the folk aesthetic as our inspiration, we designed a Christmas table in a delightful folk-themed colour palette.
Let's show you how we did it!
Our canvas was a plain, white table with no tablecloth. Instead of the traditional tablecloth, we opted for a red table runner for that bright and all-important Christmassy touch. For the tableware, we chose to play with the contrast between the dark blue plates and the crisp white bowl with small blue speckles that sits on top. We tucked the cutlery into some white napkins and wrapped them in a small length of twine to keep them closed and make them look like little Christmas presents. What do you think?
- New lower price GODTAGBAR Candlestick 3€ 4€
The rest of the elements on the table have that classic, traditional Scandinavian feel: white and blue ceramic objects that look great when combined with natural elements, such as green leaves or a mini fir tree. We topped it all off by popping a Christmas bauble in each guest's bowl.
And we're ready! That's one Christmas table option sorted.
2- An elegant Christmas table
Moving away from a more modern aesthetic, let's take a look at a Christmas table that's just as on-trend but a little more formal. Why shouldn't your table be as well-dressed as you are? Your home is celebrating too!
To create this elegant Christmas table, we opted for a subtle but glamorous colour palette of black, white and (of course) gold!
For this design, we covered the Christmas table with a delightful tablecloth. Its pattern of fine gold dots gives it that special, festive feel, without looking "over the top".
Black cutlery provides contrast and sophistication in equal measure. But we don't want the table to look stark, do we? That's where the green and gold come into play.
As a nod to the traditional iconic Christmas tree, we arranged pine branches to create a table runner or Christmas centrepiece. Then we added some decorative lighting with our gold tealight holders and LED candles, which look spectacular without being a fire hazard. Like it?

3- A rustic Christmas table
We're switching things up again for our third Christmas table. Taking our inspiration from the black-accented living room décor, we made wood the focus of our Christmas table.
We also played with a range of textures in order to achieve a rustic Christmas table. For example, we covered the table with a linen tablecloth and used wooden chopping boards as table mats for a more natural look. Not all accessories need to have a festive pattern to look good.
On this table, there's no Christmas tableware, no Christmas tablecloth, no garlands... in fact, no Christmas accessories at all.
- FULLTALIG Candlestick, set of 3 15€
What?! A Christmas table with no Christmas stuff? Don't worry, when you see the final result you'll get what we're talking about.
Instead of a table centre, we've placed a floral detail on each plate and, to provide a little warmth, we've added a few dinner candles to provide ambient light. Once the table is ready, just hang up some Christmas decorations, like fairy lights, in the living room. These little touches, together with your Christmas tree, will create the perfect setting in which to enjoy all the food and time with your guests during the holidays.
We are delighted to see our customers use our products creatively. You can be bold too! However, bear in mind that changes and modifications that you make to IKEA products will prevent them being resold or used for their original purpose and, therefore, such changes will invalidate your IKEA commercial warranty and your right to return the item.
