What Kind Of Animal Is Tom Nook

Beast Crossing: New Horizons on the Switch has arrived to hope a virtual escape for many of us who can't get out correct at present. I've been playing Animal Crossing for three weeks now, and compared with previous versions I've already felt a different sense of customs on the game'southward deserted island setting... which, eventually, becomes not so deserted.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons' director, Aya Kyogoku, and producer, Hisashi Nogami, talked to me about the new game and the process of creating it via a telephone telephone call between my home in New Bailiwick of jersey and Nintendo in Japan.

Excerpts from our conversation are below, translated by Nintendo.

I take a question from my seven-year-one-time son who has been playing for a couple of weeks. He was curious why you chose to put this game on an abandoned isle.

Kyogoku: The Animal Crossing series has been around for about twenty years. For fans who have started playing with the GameCube version, every bit well as your son, who's probably a new fan, we wanted to make sure nosotros give them a new experience. Back in New Leaf [on the 3DS], there was a village and then the histrion would move to the village, start a new life and became a mayor. This whole concept of starting a new life was an Animate being Crossing worldview. But when we started developing New Horizons, nosotros felt that if we didn't change the elements of players moving to a village, nothing actually would modify. Even the interaction with animals wouldn't modify either. We started to recall about, what nigh if we accept away the village and and so move the thespian to a deserted island. And then, equally we started exploring that, nosotros realized two things that we needed to do. The first thing is, because in that location's nothing on this deserted island, I think you lot've noticed that DIY crafting has become a big element in the game. Users are able to get forest from the copse, or get rock from a large boulder. These elements that used to only be visual backgrounds like trees and rocks, really became a source of crafting. And so we were able to requite the users a different perspective of what used to be just a visual aspect.

And because the users are moving to a deserted island, they have to develop their own village. This new addition of having to create their own hamlet from the ground up and then first their traditional Animal Crossing life afterwards that... nosotros were able to requite them a new relationship with their isle or their village, to the old fans of the series. Creating a village from zilch, I recall we were able to give them a new manner of playing. Brute Crossing games are... sometimes people say that it'south difficult to observe the goals. I think we were able to give them a sense of purpose easily and earlier on in the game by having to create a new village.

The NookPhone. You know, I laughed when I saw it introduced. I usually think about escapes from my own life being nigh getting away from my phone. Only here you lot go to a deserted island, and you have a phone, but I didn't observe that information technology was the same type of phone as I'm used to thinking of when I am glued to a screen. It was more helpful, functional. I was curious about your thoughts on introducing a phone in a game that'due south besides most taking an escape.

Kyoguku: This is non only about the phone or the phones, but throughout the Animate being Crossing series, just like home loans, we endeavour to take real life elements into the game. By having these general elements that are familiar to united states, in everyday life, we believe that it's piece of cake for the users to sympathise how they function immediately.

Although there are people who want to lessen their screen time in their everyday life, I believe that phones are a tool that comes in really handy, with functions similar cameras and maps on it. And and so we believe that by having a NookPhone, which is, like y'all said, a really slap-up tool that helps out with your life on a deserted island, we thought it'd be a really skilful match to accept a smartphone which is a familiar item in our real life, and and so to take that in the game to help users unlock these unlike elements like the camera or the the critterpedia.

I had a question about Tom Nook. I felt that in some ways, playing this, he almost seemed kinder. I was curious if you felt that mode almost him. Yous know, in the way that the isle becomes about crafting and non entirely about ownership things at the store. The communal experience felt stronger, similar we were all doing it together.

Nogami: Well, I practice want to make a note that Tom Nook has always been a great guy, he's always been a good dude. Perchance y'all felt that way because his function in this game has changed a fiddling bit. Tom Nook has always played a key role in maintaining the motivation of the player to continue to play the game. Merely then every bit a host character, we've ever had somebody else.

And because New Horizons is set on a deserted isle, and the get-go person you run across is Tom Nook introducing you and welcoming y'all to the island, and then he continues to support your life on the isle -- maybe considering he's taking care of the player a piddling bit more than the previous series, possibly y'all may sense that he's gotten nicer.

Now playing: Sentinel this: All the Switch game trailers Nintendo only announced...

Kyoguku: Even if the player didn't take whatever money, he would offer you a new dwelling house. And he'd even offering you a loan. And then if you lot can't pay him back, then he'll expect forever without really bothering you, and he'll never go angry that you've never paid him dorsum, either. That said, he's e'er been a pretty good guy. But so in the past games, players may have only interacted with him when they were making big purchases, like ownership a domicile, and then one time that's paid off, Tom would just get alee and expand the home without even checking in with the histrion, so maybe the impression that the players got back then was that he was money-hungry and he was always out to become your money. Just he is a really caring guy, a flake of a pryer. And and then he might give a wrong impression. But I do want to mention that he's had a self-reflection since the past series. At present, he actually asks the thespian whether the player wants an expansion to their dwelling or not. I want to encourage the fans to selection up on a good side of Tom Nook when they play the game.

I played all the Animate being Crossings I can think of going back to the GameCube version. And I'll first with maxim that, you lot know, it was and so influential. I was working at Sony Online Entertainment at the time (of the GameCube version), and I retrieve a game designer friend was telling me that I should play this game. Even though it wasn't an online world, information technology was inspiring, I recollect, for a lot of people who brand online worlds and think about community. I was curious about your thoughts about that, and what's changed over the years.

Nogami: I call up Animal Crossing falls nether the genre "communication game." Originally when I started creating this, ane thing I had in heed was that I wanted to create a game where there'south a unmarried save information, where multiple people can play on. Back then, with console games, online games weren't a big huge thing. I wanted to make a game where, although the players weren't able to play simultaneously, they'd exist able to switch, and play together on a single save and create communication among them. Although the communication attribute was the base concept of creating the Beast Crossing series, one of the big elements is that users will endeavor to collect little nuggets that they tin share with their friends and family unit. And throughout the series, I retrieve we have broadened the unmarried-player attribute, and how users will be able to share the experience that they played through their solo play. Throughout the series I recall we've always fabricated sure that simultaneous players were able to play together. This has been a theme throughout the series. The way to play together has evolved, to online type play, and and then with New Horizons, you're able to exercise sharing play using switch technology. And so the communication has shifted a petty flake to straight communication.

I wanted to talk nigh, globally, everything that's been going on at present. With Fauna Crossing coming out, I was feeling when I played it has an even more than powerful bear upon as far as creating a sense of community, giving people a sense of positive feelings between people. It'due south role, in a sense, of customs building or hopefulness at a fourth dimension when people are all being shut in and maybe feeling they don't have their community.

Nogami: Knowing there are people affected by the current events that are happening in the world right now, it definitely does sadden and dishearten us equally well. In Nihon, we have a piddling bit of a delay in Switch hardware production. So new fans who are wanting to play New Horizons aren't able to purchase the hardware, and they're having a hard time finding information technology. Because Animate being Crossing: New Horizons is being released at this time and when the globe is going through such a tough state of affairs, I actually do hope that many people will exist able to enjoy this game.

Are in that location whatsoever planned updates to Animal Crossing that considering of the coronavirus are facing difficulties?

Nogami: The only thing I tin can say is we actually don't know. This is the first time something like this has happened to us besides, and to the world. And we as well notice that things are evolving every solar day. Nosotros really can't predict what will happen tomorrow, so information technology's actually difficult to say.

How much practise you see New Horizons evolving over time versus other animal crossing games? Y'all know, are in that location possibilities of expansions or things like more fish or fossils? How far could this aggrandize, and will in that location be futurity updates?

Kyoguku: So every bit far as the bodily details and planning of the updates, we're nonetheless working on information technology. We want you to await for further details to be announced. Simply I can definitely say that I'm really sure at that place volition be an update and this includes Bunny Day for Apr. Beast Crossing is a game where you're able to bask seasonal changes throughout the year, and it syncs with existent time and through that yous are able to basically sync your real life with the game. We want to make sure that in two years or three years down the road, players will still continue to discover new surprises in the game. And so we promise to create an update that you can do that with.

Are in that location any features that you always wanted to add to Animal Crossing: New Horizons that you didn't get a hazard to add together this fourth dimension or that didn't quite make the cutting?

Kyoguku: I think the release version game has all the specs that nosotros wanted to include in there. However, I mentioned before, considering we desire to make sure that users will be able to find new surprises and new gain elements as they play for years down the road, nosotros wanted to brand sure that nosotros add together something for that.

Nogami: Then throughout the series though, in the by games after we've released them, there were times when we were like, oh, we should have put that spec in this title. Later on we released the Wii version, nosotros were thinking, "Oh, information technology would have been so fun if two players could simultaneously play together." And and so nosotros were able to make that happen with New Horizons because, as you lot know, the Switch hardware has two controllers.

This could be said with the DS version, besides, where we introduced internet connection. Some of the things that nosotros've ever wanted to practice, or we had an idea to do, are achievable considering of hardware advancements. And then there are besides the social advancements; society evolves constantly. Maybe we'll take new ideas we would desire to implement in a futurity update.

I know that Fauna Crossing is a little different with that. It, um, it doesn't practise cloud saves at the moment. I thought there was talk that might happen. My family unit played in an unusual style. I created an island on a Switch Lite. And and so on my account on the secondary Switch, my kids logged on and created a unlike Island because it seemed to allow that, so now nosotros have two different islands. I don't know if they'll e'er actually, you know, coexist and I would love to be able to take my island and play it on a Television, instead of being on the Switch Lite. Are there thoughts of supporting that and making cloud saves easier on Animal Crossing?

Nogami: So correct now nosotros're trying to give users ii types of function. The first affair is, when the users lose or suspension their Switch, then we will provide a backup salve data that was saved on the server. And so the second one is when the user buys a new Nintendo Switch, and so we volition transfer that account for them. For the data transfer for new Switch purchases, in that location are ii ways. The get-go one is to transfer the entire isle information onto the new Switch. So the 2d method is to extract one of the players that are living on the island, and extract that actor's save data onto the new Switch hardware. In your instance, since y'all have two Switches, information technology's basically considered that you have 2 separate islands and ii separate salve data on each of the Switch that you own.

Kyoguku: So I wanted to clarify how yous're playing, Scott. Does that hateful that you lot have downloaded the software on the Switch and then y'all have the software on the other Switch and yous're just kind of playing information technology whenever you want to play on your secondary Switch?

Exactly, only on the aforementioned account, because that'due south how I have it set upwards to access that and then it created a second Isle, simply their two islands kind of accept the same business relationship.

Kyoguku: Maybe in your state of affairs if you desire to feel the party fashion, so the easiest way would be to create another user on the secondary Switch and and so add a player and then motility them into the island and experience party play.
